Frequently Asked
Questions

In our FAQ section, you’ll discover answers to common questions about the Child Dental Benefits Schedule at Sage Dental. This area is dedicated to offering essential information, aiding you in understanding and utilising this valuable resource for your child’s dental care.

Here’s how you can check if your child is eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS):

  • MyGov Account:
You can log into your MyGov account linked to Medicare. This platform often provides updates about your child’s eligibility for various benefits, including CDBS.
  • Medicare Online Services:
You can also check your child’s eligibility through the Medicare section of the MyGov website or the Express Plus Medicare mobile app.
  • Contact Medicare Directly:
Eligibility can also be checked by contacting Services Australia at 132 150 (call charges may apply).

Below are the eligibility criteria:

  • The child must be eligible for Medicare.
  • They should be aged between 0 and 17 years at any time in the calendar year.
  • The child must receive a relevant Australian government payment, such as Family Tax Benefit Part A, during the calendar year.

Eligibility lasts for the entire calendar year, even if the child turns 18 or stops receiving the relevant government payment within that year. However, Medicare eligibility on the service’s day is a must.

Please note that eligibility is assessed at the beginning of each calendar year, and the parent/guardian is notified. This notification may be sent by post or electronically through MyGov. For further clarification, or if you haven’t received a letter and believe your child is eligible, you can call or visit a Medicare service centre.

Once you’ve confirmed your child’s CDBS eligibility, you can book your child’s appointment at Sage Dental. We’re ready to support you in every step towards a healthy smile for your child.

Under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), a range of basic dental services are covered for eligible children. At Sage Dental, these services include:

  • Dental examinations
  • X-rays
  • Dental cleaning
  • Fissure sealant
  • Fillings
  • Root canal treatments
  • Extractions
  • Partial dentures

It’s important to note that the CDBS does not cover orthodontic or cosmetic dental work or services provided in a hospital setting.

You can refer to the Dental Benefits Schedule for a detailed breakdown of services, including specific item numbers, descriptions, and
amount of benefits.

Using the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) at Sage Dental involves a few straightforward steps:

  • Check the benefit cap balance:
Verifying your child’s benefit cap balance before your visit is
advised. This can be checked online through Health Professional Online Services or by calling Services Australia at 132 150. Our staff at Sage Dental can also help you check your child’s CDBS cover.
  • Billing and payment options:
At Sage Dental, we set our fees for services under the CDBS, offering two billing methods:
    • Bulk Billing:
We accept the CDBS benefit as the complete payment for the service. No additional co-payment is charged in this scenario.
    • Patient Claim:
The patient pays for the service upfront and then claims the CDBS benefit from Medicare. We provide an itemised account/receipt for this purpose.
  • Lodging a claim:
Claims can be lodged either electronically or manually. This process is designed to be smooth and efficient for you and your child.

At Sage Dental, we aim to make the process of using the CDBS as smooth as possible. We focus on providing your child with the necessary dental care in a
simple and stress-free manner.

When using the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) at Sage Dental, there are two primary ways we handle billing, which may result in different out-of-pocket costs:

  • Bulk Billing:
Under this option, Sage Dental accepts the CDBS benefits as the full payment for the service. There are no additional costs or co-payments charged to the patient for bulk-billed services.
  • Patient Claim:
If Sage Dental charges more than the CDBS benefit for a service, these additional charges must be met by the patient.

In this scenario, the patient pays the full amount for the services provided. They are then given an itemised account or receipt, which they can use to claim the CDBS benefit from Medicare. The patient is responsible for any difference between the service fee and the CDBS benefit.

It’s important to discuss the billing options with our team at Sage Dental to understand any potential out-of-pocket costs that might apply when accessing dental services using the CDBS.

To know if your child has reached their limit under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule at Sage Dental, follow these steps:

  • Check the benefit cap balance:
    • You can check the current balance of your child’s benefit cap online through Health Professional Online Services.
    • You can call Services Australia on 132 150 (note that call charges may apply).
  • Regular checks:
    • It’s advisable to check the cap balance at each dental visit to stay informed about the remaining benefits available for your child.

These processes
will help you effectively manage and plan your child’s dental care within the CDBS limits.
